The defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard began on May 16 following a week’s break, with the latter returning to the stands to complete her evidence. During the last seconds of her cross-examination, Heard explained why Depp didn’t glance at her during the trial.
Heard said that Depp avoided eye contact with her because he was “guilty” while speaking to her own lawyer, Elaine Bredehoft, through intermediaries. In response, Depp was observed telling his attorneys, “I don’t want to.”

Following Tuesday’s court appearance, a video of Depp mumbling his response to the lawyer went viral online. Johnny Depp sued Amber Heard for $50 million after she declared herself a “domestic violence survivor” in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed. Although the piece did not specifically name Depp, his legal team argued that it harmed his image and harmed his career.
Heard countersued Depp for $100 million, alleging that the actor assaulted her on many occasions throughout their relationship. During the most recent defamation trial, both parties claimed to be victims of domestic violence and accused one other of being violent in the past.
For over five weeks, the Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard defamation trial has dominated headlines. At the end of her evidence on Tuesday, Heard was subjected to a scathing cross-examination by Depp’s lawyer Camille Vasquez.

What did Amber Heard say about Johnny Depp avoiding eye contact?
During the questioning, Vasquez questioned Heard if she had observed that Depp had avoided looking her in the eyes during the trial:
Vasquez then pointed out that the actress had repeatedly gazed at Depp in court. She further stated that Depp allegedly promised Heard that she would “never see his eyes” when the actress filed for divorce and sought a restraining order against him in 2016:
When Heard stated she couldn’t “recall” Depp’s vow, Vasquez played an audiotape of the former couple’s chat in a San Francisco hotel room in 2016.
According to reports, the tape was captured after Heard filed for divorce and got a restraining order against Depp. The Aquaman star may be heard saying on the audio.
In reaction, Depp was heard saying that he was “nothing” to Heard and promising that she would never look him in the eyes.
Heard raised the same problem with her own counsel, Elaine Bredehoft, after the cross-examination. When the latter asked the actress a similar question, she stated that Johnny Depp avoided looking at her in court because he was “guilty.”
